About Hillcrest PS

Hillcrest Primary School is located in the suburb of Bayswater about 10 kilometres from Perth CBD. Hillcrest serves mainly children from the suburbs of Bayswater, Bedford and  Embleton. Hillcrest is centrally placed near the junction of Coode Street and Broun Avenue and is prominently situated on the crest of a large hill.
Early Childhood Centre (ECC 1,2 & 3)  catering for 60 students operates at 2 Bay View Street. In 2016, the new purpose built Early Childhood Centre opened for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students. A fantastic nature play area including sand pits, water play and logs is part of the new Early Childhood Centre.
Early Childhood Centres (4 & 5) cater for up to 54 Pre-Primary students on-site. The P&C created a nature play area outside ECC 4 & 5 in January 2016.
Hillcrest PS caters for approximately 400 students from K-6 from generally typically Australian backgrounds. Their ethnic origins include a majority of children whose parents were born in Australia but includes several students from a range of ethnic backgrounds creating a school with a multicultural climate.

Aboriginal Historical Site on the Hillcrest School Site
Hillcrest was built on the top of one the highest hills in Bayswater and Bedford and commands excellent views of Perth city and across the Swan river to the Darling Range. This school was originally known as Bedford Park school but was renamed Hillcrest for obvious reasons. It has been recorded that during the  construction of the Hillcrest school in 1950’s that some aboriginal implements, relics and tools were  uncovered when levelling and foundation work took place. This was a gathering place where the Nyoongar Aboriginal people (Wadjuk Country) made their hunting spears, tools and implements and gathered to cook, eat and share their food. They had a wonderful viewing place over the surrounding area (Wadjuk Country) and chose this place as the main gathering point as there were many swamps and low lying areas that became covered with water during the wet winters.
The P&C of 1954  decided to commemorate the Aboriginal site by planting a tree in the south east corner directly behind where Room 8 and the New Multi-purpose art, craft, science, technology and enterprise room are presently. This tree grew to be a very  large gum tree and was 43 years old in 1997 . Unfortunately this tree had to be removed for the building of our new Covered Assembly area. That tree stood where the stage now is and reminds us of the historical importance of this site. The plaque to commemorate the tree planting can now be seen in the memorial area in front of the New Art and Craft room and Room 5

Hillcrest also adopted the aboriginal saying “Wargado” meaning to strive as its school motto.
